EMBRACING WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SPORT
The Malaysia Women Marathon (MWM2019) marks its 7 year establishment and will once again be organised by Tourism Selangor for this year. MWM2019 is expected to be a major event for Selangor as international runners will be swarming to this sporting event in conjunction with celebrating International Women's Day. To date, more than 7,000 ladies have shown interest in this year's event. As the only endorsed Women Marathon in Southeast Asia, MWM is used to enjoying overwhelmingly positive receptions from women in the region.
The main event will be taking place at Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya this year on March 3, moving from the usual venue of Shah Alam.
To commemorate this year's MWM theme, the art piece "Ode to Women," also known as "Wanita" by Habsah Abang Saufi; one of Malaysia's highly regarded artists has been chosen to signify the nation's unity in supporting women empowerment.
"We recreated her painting into our event t-shirt. This dedication is wonderfully suitable for a women's event such as ours as we hope that this theme will recollect our stand towards an issue that we are proud to be associated with gender equality," general manager of Tourism Selangor; Madam Noorul Ashikin Mohd Din said.
"What's more, as though this isn't energising enough, we would like to proudly announce that we have collaborated with Swarovski Malaysia to create a symbolic medal that is decorated with precious stones from Swarovski. We can't wait to hand this one of a kind medal to you at the finish line!" she added.
The highlight of MWM2019 will once again be the 42km full marathon category on 3 March, but besides this, there will be two-days' worth of activities from 28 February to 1 March including a women expo, a cultural dance performance, stage performance both exhibition and many more. Tourism Selangor will also showcase a special promotion price travel package to Kuala Selangor consisting of tourist hotspots such as Sky Mirror, Bukit Malawati, Sekinchan, seafood dinner at Pasir Penambang and also to witness the fireflies’ uniqueness at Kampung Kuantan.
This year's event will also introduce a new system for the full marathon. Anybody who feels that they are unable to finish the 42km halfway through can opt to run back to the starting point and be awarded a certification of completion for a 30km run instead. Beginner full marathoners can now feel more confident that they will not be given a disheartening "did not finish" status and will be able to cross the finish line in glory.
MWM2019 is tipped to bring out the best of Selangor with a huge turnout expected. The state is targeting 7.7 million tourists this year, and such an event will be sure to boost Tourism Selangor’s #takemeanywhere campaign.
